Ingredients

  • 2ΒΌ lbs ground round, chuck, or sirloin
  • 1 onion, cut into 6 thick slices
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 6 hamburger buns
  • 1 head red leaf lettuce, washed and separated
  • 6 slices cheddar cheese
  • 1 medium tomato, cut into 6 slices
  • 12 slices dill or sweet pickles
  • 12 strips cooked bacon
  • Ketchup
  • Mustard
  • Mayonnaise
  1. Preheat your grill and oil the grate.
  2. Divide the meat into 6 equal portions. With wet hands, shape each into a 4-inch round patty.
  3. Brush one side of each onion slice lightly with olive oil.
  4. Season both the patties and onions with salt and pepper.
  5. Place patties and onions on the grill. After 5 minutes, flip the patties and continue grilling until nicely browned and cooked to your preference. Remove onions when browned and tender.
  6. Brush the cut sides of the buns with remaining olive oil and grill, cut side down, for the last 2 minutes.
  7. Place bottom buns on a platter. Add lettuce, cheese, and a hot patty (so the cheese melts).
  8. Serve with tomato, pickles, bacon, grilled onions, and your choice of ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise.
