Why We Don’t Carry Everything — and Never Will
Walk into a Clark’s Market and you might notice something a little different.
You’ll find beautiful produce, thoughtfully sourced meats, local specialties, everyday essentials, and products that inspire great meals. What you won’t find are endless aisles of nearly identical items competing for space.
In fact, there are entire categories where we carry fewer options than you might see at a large chain store.
And that’s intentional.
Because at Clark’s Market, we’ve never believed that more choices always make for a better grocery store.
Instead, we believe in something simpler: carry the best, not the most.
A Grocery Store Built Around Food, Not Just Products
The modern grocery industry has become a race for shelf space. And, in our opinion, often a race to the bottom. Who can sell the most junk for the cheapest price? Listen, we’re not saying you shouldn’t grab a pint of ice cream or some tortilla chips and dip when the urge strikes, but we are saying that those items should be made as transparently as possible with as few ingredients as possible, and local whenever possible.
Large chains often measure success by the number of items they can fit into a category. That’s why you sometimes see 20 versions of the same product lining the shelf — each slightly different but essentially the same. But that approach isn’t how we think about food.
Clark’s Market has always been built around the idea that great ingredients lead to great meals, and great meals bring people together.
That philosophy shapes every decision we make about what goes on our shelves.
Rather than filling aisles with endless variations, our team focuses on selecting products that are:
- High quality
- Thoughtfully produced
- Delicious and dependable
- Aligned with the way our communities like to eat
Curated, Not Crowded
One way to think about Clark’s Market is that we’re a curated grocery store.
Our buyers and store teams spend countless hours tasting, testing, and evaluating products before they ever reach the shelf. We’re constantly asking questions like:
- Does this product taste great?
- Is it made with quality ingredients?
- Does it offer something unique or meaningful?
- Will it inspire our customers in their kitchens?
- Is it local?
If the answer isn’t a clear yes, it may not make it into the store.
That’s why you won’t find us carrying 19 varieties of sugary cereal or endless rows of candy bars. Instead, you’ll find a selection that balances everyday staples, specialty foods, better-for-you options, and local and regional favorites.
Enough choice to inspire you — without overwhelming you.
We look for products that truly earn their place in the store, which is why it shouldn’t surprise you that we visit the dairy farms in Wisconsin to see how the cows are treated and to feel good about the brand we are bringing into our store before we launch a new Meet the Maker partnership with the Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin. We have a team who sources the best Italian Olive Oil—in Italy. Does it cost more to do that? You bet it does, but in our opinion, you can’t put a price tag on peace of mind. When we partnered with fifth-generation farmers, Kelli and Drew Broughton in Delta, Colorado to grow produce specifically for Clark’s Market, we spent a day on the farm planting the seeds ourselves, because getting in the dirt with the farmers we support is how to gauge character—theirs and ours.
Sourced with Intention
Another reason our shelves look different is because we place a lot of emphasis on where our food comes from.
Clark’s Market sources products from a wide range of partners, including:
- Local farmers and producers
- Regional makers and artisans
- Trusted national suppliers
- Specialty purveyors from around the world
We’re constantly exploring new foods, flavors, and ideas that can bring something special to our stores.
Sometimes that means introducing a small-batch jam made just down the road. Other times it means sourcing a specialty olive oil from a producer halfway around the globe.
The common thread is that each product is selected intentionally — because we believe it adds something meaningful to the experience of shopping at Clark’s Market.
Let’s be honest, you’re going to see Peeps on the shelf at Easter, and Candy Corns on the shelf at Halloween, not because they check all of the boxes of sourcing the highest quality ingredients, but they certainly scratch that sugary candy holiday itch that thousands of our customers have and we’re nothing if not all in on creating a best-in-class customer experience.
The Freedom of Being Independent
Our independence plays a big role in how we approach our shelves. Unlike large national chains, Clark’s Market isn’t bound by corporate product mandates or national planograms that dictate what must be stocked.
That independence gives us the freedom to:
- Respond to what our local customers love
- Highlight regional products
- Experiment with new discoveries
- Adjust our assortment as tastes evolve
It also allows us to build authentic relationships with the producers and suppliers who bring incredible food to our stores. Being independent means we can stay curious, flexible, and thoughtful about what we offer.
A Better Shopping Experience
There’s another benefit to carrying fewer — but better — choices. Shopping becomes easier.
Instead of standing in front of a wall of nearly identical products wondering which one to choose, customers can trust that the options on our shelves have already been thoughtfully considered.
It’s a grocery experience designed around inspiration rather than overload.
Our goal is that when you shop at Clark’s Market, you’ll discover foods that help you cook better meals, try something new, or simply enjoy something delicious. At the heart of Clark’s Market is our simple belief: food is love.
Every product on our shelves is an opportunity to help someone create a meaningful meal, share something special with friends and family, or discover a new favorite ingredient or taste. And that’s something we take seriously.
Quality Over Quantity
So, if you ever notice that Clark’s Market doesn’t carry quite as many items in a category as some larger stores, it’s not because we couldn’t. It’s because we choose not to.
We believe a great grocery store isn’t defined by how many products it can carry — but by how thoughtfully it chooses them.
Our promise to you is simple: We’ll keep searching for the best ingredients, the best producers, and the best foods we can find. And we’ll keep filling our shelves with products that truly deserve to be there.
Even if that means we don’t carry everything.
And never will.
P.S. — We’ll special order anything. If there’s something you want us to bring in just for you, we’ll do it. If you need a special order for a party or a holiday, just ask. It will be our pleasure to make it happen.
